10,000 Tonnes of Floodwater Pumped from Male’ Streets

Following continuous rainfall that flooded nearly all streets in Male’, the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) reported pumping approximately 10,000 tonnes of water off the streets by last night.

The heavy rains began at 11 a.m. and persisted throughout the day and late into the night, with floodwaters infiltrating homes and businesses across the island, causing varying degrees of damage. Maafannu was the worst-hit area, experiencing the highest levels of flooding.

In a statement to the media, MNDF detailed its dewatering efforts, deploying pumps in six key locations: five pumps at West Park, five near IGMH, three near Salman Mosque, and one each at the Bodu Valhu area, Maafannu Ferry Terminal, and the Voice of Maldives area.

By 8:30 p.m., MNDF confirmed that 9,917 tonnes of water had been removed from Male’ streets.

According to the Maldives Meteorological Service, Male’ recorded 160 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, with the heaviest downpour, 60 mm, occurring between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.
