Maldivian swimmers Mohamed Aan Hussain and Hamna Ahmed recently set new national records at Hungary’s 20th National Shortcourse Championships, further elevating Maldives’ presence on the international swimming stage. Competing in various events, both athletes broke previous national records, demonstrating remarkable skill and progress in the sport.
Hamna’s performance in the 200m backstroke was a highlight as she completed the event in 3:00.53, surpassing the previous national record set during the 2019 South Asian Games. Meanwhile, Aan showcased his talent by breaking three records across different events. He achieved a 23.79-second finish in the 50m freestyle, surpassing his recent record from the Buda Cup. He also beat two records in the 50m butterfly and 200m freestyle, previously held by fellow Maldivian swimmer Mohamed Rihan Shiham
These achievements reflect the Maldives’ growing dedication to developing young talent in swimming, and they inspire further investment in sports infrastructure and training. Competing on international platforms not only hones these athletes’ skills but also brings positive recognition to the Maldives, enhancing its reputation in regional and global aquatic sports. With this momentum, the country’s swimming community gains both visibility and motivation, encouraging more young Maldivians to engage in competitive swimming and other sports.
