Kurendhoo Holds Addu to a Draw Despite Star-Studded Lineup

In an intense Gold Cup clash yesterday, Addu missed their chance to claim victory, as Kurendhoo equalized in the final moments, leaving the match tied 1-1.

The game marked the return of former national team midfielder Shamweel Gasim (Bonda) to the Galolhu National Stadium. At 42 years old, the veteran player led Addu as team captain, showcasing his enduring skill on the field.

Bonda set up a key opportunity for Mohamed Dhanish Ibrahim, whose attempt at goal was thwarted by Kurendhoo’s goalkeeper, Sujan Perera. The Sri Lankan national keeper displayed remarkable form, denying multiple attempts by Addu, including both shots in the first half.

Addu dominated offensively, with Hizam Fauzy breaking through to score the game’s opening goal, putting his team in the lead. Despite their relentless efforts, Kurendhoo’s defense, led by Perera, kept the scoreline tight.

Addu fielded a squad packed with first-division talent, including defender Abdulla Haneef (Benjo), who doubled as a player-coach, and seasoned players like Ali Nafiu and Zaul Nizam. Notably absent from the field were Ismail Easa (Messi) and Ibrahim Waheed Hassan (Ibbe), who remain part of the squad.

Kurendhoo’s game-changer came from Belgium midfielder Jody Vulugalz, whose strike in the dying minutes secured the draw. Despite the result, the match highlighted both teams’ skill and determination in the tournament.
