Strong Winds Damage Homes in Addu City; 17 People Relocated

Severe winds tore off the roofs of five homes in Addu City on Friday night, forcing 17 residents, including four children under the age of 12, to move to temporary shelters.

Addu Councilman Ahmed Nadhir reported on Saturday that heavy rain and strong winds caused widespread damage across multiple districts, including Maradhoo, Maradhoo-Feydhoo, Feydhoo, and Hulhudhoo.

The most severe damage occurred in Maradhoo-Feydhoo, where the entire roof of a house—including its bedrooms, living room, and kitchen—was ripped off, leaving the residents no choice but to relocate to relatives’ homes.

The Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) Southern Area Command provided assistance following the incidents. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Maldives Meteorological Service have urged the public to remain vigilant as strong winds and rough seas are expected to persist. Seafarers are advised to exercise caution, and residents are encouraged to take necessary precautions to minimize damage.
