The Maldives recently welcomed its first cruise ship since implementing regulatory changes by the Maldives Association of Yacht Agents (MAYA). The Italian-flagged AIDA arrived from Muscat, Oman, on December 8, 2024.
According to Maldives Immigration, 2,319 passengers disembarked from the cruise ship, marking a key moment for the nation’s tourism industry. Immigration officials noted that Seaport Division officers began the clearance process while the vessel was en route from Muscat, from December 4 to 8.
The arrival of the AIDA signifies a milestone in diversifying the Maldives’ tourism offerings. The surge in visitors is anticipated to stimulate local businesses, including restaurants, souvenir shops, guesthouses, and retail establishments in Malé and Hulhumalé. This boost is expected to contribute positively to the nation’s foreign reserves and overall economic growth.
This achievement aligns with the Maldives’ broader strategy to enhance its tourism sector. The nation continues to earn global recognition, having recently secured the title of World’s Leading Destination for an impressive fifth consecutive year.
