International Assistance Sought to Probe Fire Incident

Commissioner of Police (CP) Ali Shujau announced plans to seek international support in investigating the fire that engulfed three ministry buildings and an office of the Malé City Council on Thursday.

During a press briefing at Dharubaaruge, CP Shujau shared updates on the incident, stating that all police resources had been mobilized to assist the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) in extinguishing the blaze. He emphasized the commitment to conducting a comprehensive investigation into the major fire and confirmed that overseas expertise would be enlisted to aid in the process. The public will be kept informed as the investigation progresses, he assured.

The scene has been officially handed over to the police, with forensic teams actively working in the area. Investigators are collecting and analyzing CCTV footage and gathering statements from eyewitnesses and others present at the site.

CP Shujau also urged anyone with information related to the fire to come forward and assist authorities in their inquiries.

The fire reportedly started at the Housing Ministry around 6:30 AM on Thursday, subsequently spreading to the Construction Ministry and the neighboring Environment Ministry. Although the fire was contained after four hours, it caused extensive damage to the buildings.
