Maldives Takes a Stand: Vaping Ban Enacted to Safeguard Future Generations

Responding to the growing concerns of its citizens, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced that vaping has been officially banned in the Maldives, marking a significant move to prioritize public health.

The decision comes with an amendment to the Tobacco Control Act, which prohibits the sale and trade of vape products nationwide, effective immediately. Speaking during a visit to Mahibadhoo in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, President Muizzu emphasized that this step was a direct response to public demand aimed at protecting the nation’s youth and future generations.

“The global rise of harmful habits has unfortunately reached our communities,” the President remarked. While acknowledging that vape businesses previously operated within the law, he expressed gratitude to those who abided by the regulations and clarified that the decision to ban was driven by the people’s repeated calls for action.

“I understand that vape traders were acting within legal bounds, and this is not about blaming them,” he said. “However, our nation has endured enough. The people have continuously urged us to safeguard our youth, and we have decided to act decisively.”

In addition to addressing the vaping issue, President Muizzu shed light on broader efforts to combat drug abuse and enhance the social landscape of the Maldives. He noted the persistent challenges posed by drug addiction and pointed out that loopholes in the legal framework had allowed these issues to persist. Despite the hurdles, he expressed optimism, stating that with firm resolve, the country could overcome these challenges and build a healthier, brighter future for its people.

This bold move underscores the Maldivian government’s commitment to addressing public health concerns and safeguarding the wellbeing of its citizens, particularly the younger generation.
