Heavy Rainfall Triggers Flooding Across the Maldives

Heavy rainfall has led to widespread flooding in the Maldives, causing significant damage to homes in multiple regions.

  • Severe Impact on Henbadhoo: Henbadhoo in Noonu Atoll has been hit hardest, with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reporting damage to 75 houses. Relief efforts are underway, with the NDMA coordinating closely with island councils and the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) to assist affected residents.
  • Ongoing Relief Operations: The MNDF Fire and Rescue Service is actively engaged in pumping water from flooded homes and roads in Malé City and other impacted areas.
  • Yellow Alert Issued: The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has issued a yellow alert for regions from Haa Alif Atoll to Alif Dhaal Atoll. Heavy rainfall, strong winds (13–23 mph), and gusts of up to 40–55 mph are expected, posing risks of rough seas, high tides, and coastal erosion, particularly in central and southern atolls.
  • Precautionary Measures: Local authorities urge residents to take precautions, such as using sandbags to prevent flooding and securing valuables. Relief efforts are also being focused on Kurendhoo in Lhaviyani Atoll and Kendhikulhudhoo in Noonu Atoll.
  • Weather Outlook: The adverse weather, influenced by a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal and a westward-moving trough, is expected to improve later this week.
  • Safety Advisory: The MET Office advises seafarers and coastal communities to exercise caution as the Hulhangu monsoon season nears its conclusion.

Authorities continue to work diligently to minimize the impact and ensure the safety of residents across the affected areas.
