The Maldives observed a solemn moment of silence today in memory of those who lost their lives or went missing during the 2004 tsunami.
The moment of silence was held at 9:23 a.m., marking the exact time the tsunami struck the Maldives on December 26, 2004. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu led the observance, joined by senior government officials, cabinet ministers, and staff from the President’s Office.
Employees of various offices in Malé also gathered outside their workplaces to participate in the tribute. This annual observance has become a tradition, with the day designated as National Unity Day to honor the spirit of resilience and solidarity demonstrated by the Maldivian people during the aftermath of the disaster.
The 2004 tsunami caused the deaths of 82 people and left 26 others missing. It inflicted widespread destruction across the nation, severely damaging numerous islands and displacing approximately 22,000 people. Among the hardest-hit areas were Raa Atoll Kandholhudhoo, Thaa Atoll Vilufushi, and Meemu Atoll Madifushi, along with other islands that were completely devastated.
National Unity Day serves as a reminder of the tragedy and the collective strength of the Maldives in overcoming adversity.
