Minor Earthquake Near Maldives, No Threat Reported

A minor earthquake struck 912 kilometers from Malé City, the capital of the Maldives, but the MET Office has confirmed that it poses no threat to the country.

The earthquake, measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale, occurred today at approximately 1:38 PM at the Carlsberg Ridge in the Indian Ocean. Due to its low magnitude, there is no risk of a tsunami or any other impact on surrounding areas.

Addu Atoll is the nearest Maldivian atoll to the earthquake’s location. The strongest recorded earthquake in this region was a magnitude 7.6 event on July 15, 2003.
