A bike sharing scheme has been introduced in Hulhumale’ as part of the government’s efforts to reduce toxic gases emitted into the atmosphere.
Environment Minister Thorig Ibrahim told a press conference at the President’s Office yesterday that a bike sharing scheme will be launched soon in Hulhumale’ as part of the government’s Low Emission Transport Project.
Electric pedal assisted or 100 battery bicycles are being handed over to HDC to start the scheme, he said.
“Very soon we will sign an agreement with HDC to bring these bicycles,” he said.
Thorig said solar charging stations will also be built in Hulhumale’ to charge the batteries used for the bicycles.
The studies required to start the scheme in Hulhumale’ have been completed and funds have been arranged, he said.
The government has not given any further details about the scheme. However, bike sharing schemes are already common in major cities in other countries.
The scheme operates in cities like Dubai. It is a bicycle rental scheme for a fixed time and price. There are rental and charging stations in various parts of the city. There are also special parking spaces on the roads. There is also a mobile application for the scheme.
The project is also part of various projects planned by the government to reduce dependence on oil and increase the use of renewable energy. By 2028, 33 percent of Maldive’s energy generation will be renewable to reduce its dependence on oil. Mohammed Muizzu’s promise.
