Health Minister Abdullah Nazim has announced that Aasandha services will now support individuals seeking to quit tobacco.
Following a cabinet decision on Sunday, the government plans to establish tobacco cessation clinics on every island in the Maldives to assist smokers in overcoming their addiction.
At a press conference, the Health Ministry emphasized its commitment to addressing tobacco addiction. Nicotine patches and gum will be made available through Aasandha to encourage smokers to quit, the minister stated.
Minister Nazim highlighted that a budget has been allocated for the nationwide rollout of the cessation services, and the training of necessary personnel is already underway. The ministry aims to provide these services across all islands within the coming months.
Currently, cessation services are available at three hospitals and a clinic in Malé City, along with 48 other islands throughout the Maldives. Additionally, the ministry has introduced a dedicated hotline to support those looking to quit smoking.
