Additional Fees for Communication Service Providers Starting Next Year

Starting next year, communication service providers in the Maldives will be subject to an additional fee.

As outlined in the upcoming year’s budget, the government plans to introduce a frequency spectrum charge to maintain the country’s radio frequency spectrum. This measure is part of broader efforts to boost revenue and manage fiscal and debt obligations. The fee will be implemented through amendments to relevant laws and regulations, though the budget does not detail the projected revenue from this initiative.

The total state revenue for next year is expected to reach MVR 40 billion, with MVR 29 billion collected through taxes. Revenue-enhancing measures include increases in TGST, green tax, airport tax, and fees, along with higher import duties on cigarettes. The necessary legal amendments for these changes have already been approved. Additionally, an extra fee will be applied to land reclamation projects.
