Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb has been directed to pay a remaining fine of MVR 1 million to the government within one month, as ruled by the Civil Court.
Previously, Adeeb was sentenced to 20 years in prison and fined MVR 2 million over seven counts of fraud linked to the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) scandal. While part of the fine has been paid, the unpaid balance prompted the state to return to court.
During the hearing, Adeeb’s representatives informed the court that he could not pay the fine in a lump sum. However, the government rejected any extensions beyond a month, leading the court to enforce the one-month deadline starting from yesterday.
Although originally sentenced to 20 years in jail, Adeeb’s sentence was dramatically reduced to just four days by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih during his final term in office. This decision faced widespread criticism, and Adeeb is now a free man residing abroad.
