Barceló Nasandhura Malé to Launch This Month, Reviving a Historic Landmark

Barceló Nasandhura Malé, a five-star luxury hotel located on the iconic site of the former Nasandhura Palace Hotel, is set to open its doors this month. With a substantial investment of USD 90 million, the property boasts 126 upscale rooms and 118 serviced apartments, establishing itself as the largest hotel in the Malé area.

Operated by the globally renowned Barceló Group, which manages premium properties across the UAE, Thailand, and Europe, the hotel represents a significant addition to the Maldivian hospitality market. Initially, some apartments were intended for residential use, but they are now being offered at competitive daily rates.

The opening, originally planned for December 1, faced minor delays due to finishing touches, but the hotel is expected to welcome guests within the next two to three weeks. Room rates range from USD 270 to USD 350 per night, with a standard room priced at USD 272 on the Barceló website.

Barceló Nasandhura Malé is owned by Nasandhura Palace Holdings (NPH), a joint venture comprising Maldivian and Sri Lankan shareholders. The company also manages the Barceló Whale Lagoon Resort, further expanding its presence in the region.

A Look Back: The Legacy of Nasandhura

The original Nasandhura Palace Hotel, inaugurated in 1981, was among the first prominent accommodations in Malé, serving as a cornerstone of the Maldives’ early tourism industry. Known for its hospitality and central location, it was a preferred choice for diplomats, government officials, and international visitors.

After over three decades of operation, the Nasandhura Palace Hotel closed its doors in 2015 to make way for redevelopment. The new Barceló Nasandhura Malé preserves the site’s legacy while elevating its offerings to meet modern luxury standards, reinforcing its position as a key player in the Maldives’ evolving tourism landscape.
