Canoeing Temporarily Banned in Kulhudhuhfushi Mangroves to Protect Flamingos

Kulhudhuhfushi authorities have temporarily prohibited canoeing in the island’s mangroves to prevent disturbances to the migratory flamingos currently roosting there.

Since 2022, flamingos have been visiting the Maldives during their annual migration. This year, their first stop is the Kulhudhuhfushi mangroves, where they continue to reside.

In a recent announcement, the Kulhudhuhfushi Council reported receiving complaints about individuals in canoes approaching too closely to the flamingos and engaging in activities that could disrupt the birds. In response, the council has imposed a temporary ban on canoeing in the area.

The council has also called on the public to report any instances of canoeing or other actions that could disturb the flamingos.

The visiting birds have drawn significant attention from residents, with many flocking to the mangroves daily to capture photographs, which are being widely shared on social media.
