Emergency Motion Filed in Parliament Over MDP Activist’s Remarks

An emergency motion was tabled in Parliament today, condemning remarks by a Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) activist suggesting that actions taken against Mohamed Ameen, the Maldives’ first President, might need to be repeated with the current President, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

The motion, submitted by Milandhoo MP Hassan Mufeed, described the comments as incitement to terrorism, undermining constitutional processes, and promoting public unrest. It criticized the remarks as inflammatory and harmful, accusing them of encouraging violence against President Muizzu.

The controversy stems from references to the contentious end of Mohamed Ameen’s presidency and his tragic demise. MP Mufeed’s motion called for a thorough investigation into the activist’s statements, alleging that they sought to advance a political agenda at the expense of public safety and constitutional stability.

The motion passed with 44 votes in favor, backed by the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC), while eight MDP members opposed it.

At a press conference, MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail defended the activist’s comments, claiming they were intended as a cautionary message to President Muizzu rather than a threat. Fayyaz explained that the remarks highlighted historical lessons to warn against decisions that could harm the public, suggesting that past events show such actions can lead to serious consequences.

Farahnaz Faisal, granddaughter of Mohamed Ameen and former Maldivian ambassador to the UK, condemned any justification for actions outside Islamic Sharia. She emphasized that Islam strictly prohibits extrajudicial killings.

When asked whether the activist’s statements reflected the official stance of the MDP, Fayyaz denied this, asserting that if such views were representative of the party, it would no longer be the same MDP that once stood for protecting fundamental rights, including the right to life.
