Farahnaz Faisal, the former Maldivian High Commissioner to the UK, has strongly criticized Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson and former Economic Minister, Fayyaz Ismail, for controversial comments directed at President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
In a post on her X account, Farah highlighted that Islam unequivocally condemns extrajudicial killings, asserting that no justification can validate such acts. Her response came after Fayyaz, during a press interaction, suggested that President Muizzu might share the tragic fate of former President Mohamed Amin Didi. Farah questioned whether this reflected the MDP’s official stance, noting that such rhetoric contradicts the human rights principles the party once upheld.
The mention of Mohamed Amin Didi evokes a painful chapter in Maldivian history. Didi, the Maldives’ first president and a progressive reformer, advocated for modernization, women’s rights, and education. Despite his significant contributions, he fell victim to a violent uprising fueled by political ambition. Publicly tortured and exiled to Vihamanafushi, his untimely death remains a symbol of betrayal and injustice.
Farah emphasized the need to condemn any incitement to violence, especially in a society rooted in Islamic values of peace and harmony. She invoked verses from the Quran (Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:32–33) that denounce unjust killings and called for greater public awareness of the dangers of normalizing such rhetoric.
Her criticism also questioned the MDP’s current commitment to human rights, suggesting that selective application of these principles undermines their authenticity.
This controversy underscores the need for responsible political discourse in the Maldives. Reflecting on its historical wounds, the nation must ensure debates remain respectful and constructive, honoring the legacy of visionary leaders like Amin Didi while fostering justice and unity.
