Former Democrats Leader Hassan Latheef Rejoins MDP

Hassan Latheef, who stepped down as President of The Democrats yesterday, has officially rejoined the main opposition party, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), today.

Latheef previously held the position of Chairperson within the MDP. However, ahead of the 2023 presidential elections, disagreements within the party prompted him and other supporters of former President Mohamed Nasheed to leave the MDP. Together, they formed The Democrats, distancing themselves from then-President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s leadership.

As one of the founding members of The Democrats, Latheef played a pivotal role in the party’s establishment. Several other notable figures who joined him in forming the party—such as former STO Managing Director Hussain Amru, former MDP Deputy President Mohamed Shifaz, and former Central Henveiru MP Ali Azim—have also returned to the MDP.

The MDP is gearing up for a significant rally on January 31, themed “In Defence of the Constitution,” as its former leaders realign with the party.
