As Christmas approaches, the Ministry of Islamic Affairs has issued a reminder emphasizing the illegality of celebrating non-Islamic festivals in the Maldives.
In a circular addressed to island councils and signed by Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, the ministry urged employers of foreign workers and those involved in tourism to adhere to national laws and regulations. It also called on them to ensure that foreign employees comply with these rules.
According to the Religious Unity Regulations, individuals or organizations bringing foreigners into the Maldives are responsible for instructing them to follow these laws. Non-Muslims residing in or visiting the Maldives are prohibited from conducting public religious activities or involving Maldivians in such activities.
The Islamic Ministry underscored that any religious practices outside of Islam are strictly forbidden in public spaces across the country. Additionally, the ministry called on islands hosting guesthouses to ensure compliance with these regulations and to remind tourists to dress in ways that align with general social norms.
