The Maldives and Azerbaijan have signed a pivotal agreement enabling Maldivians holding diplomatic passports to travel visa-free to Azerbaijan. This initiative reflects both nations’ commitment to fostering closer bilateral ties and simplifying movement for diplomatic and official representatives.
Maldivian Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jayhun Bayramov formalized the agreement in Baku during the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC. The agreement, titled “Mutual Exemption of Visa Requirement for Holders of Diplomatic, Service, and Official Passports,” will allow eligible Maldivians to enter, transit, and stay in Azerbaijan for up to 90 days.
The Maldivian Foreign Ministry hailed this as a step toward broader visa exemptions for all Maldivian citizens, a goal both governments are open to exploring further.
Tourism Collaboration
In addition to easing diplomatic travel, the two nations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Cooperation in Tourism. The MoU aims to enhance mutual tourism development, recognizing its importance for economic, cultural, and social progress.
Foreign Minister Khaleel emphasized the strong bonds of friendship between the two countries, expressing optimism about deepening cultural and tourism exchanges. He noted that these agreements pave the way for enhanced people-to-people connections and further collaboration in multilateral settings.
This partnership marks a significant stride in strengthening Maldives-Azerbaijan relations, promising mutual benefits in diplomacy, tourism, and cultural ties.
