In response to the increasing number of snorkeling-related accidents involving tourists, the Ministry of Tourism has implemented new safety measures for tourism service providers across the Maldives.
A circular issued to guesthouses, snorkeling and water sports operators, homestays, and tourist vessels highlighted the urgent need to address the rising incidents during ocean activities. With many tourists engaging in water sports, the ministry emphasized swift action to ensure their safety.
While a formal regulation is under development and will soon be published in the government gazette, the Ministry has urged all service providers to comply with the newly introduced safety standards immediately, especially as the peak tourism season approaches.
Key Safety Measures Include:
- Providing detailed safety instructions before any activity begins.
- Ensuring all equipment meets safety standards and is used correctly.
- Requiring non-swimmers to wear life jackets at all times.
- Establishing boundaries for water activities where applicable.
- Halting activities during adverse weather conditions or if safety concerns arise.
- Sharing daily weather updates with participants.
- Maintaining clear communication channels between instructors and their centers.
- Keeping detailed logs of participants, including their identification details and age.
- Requiring participants to sign a consent and health disclosure form, with added parental consent for minors under 16.
These measures aim to prioritize the well-being of tourists while maintaining the Maldives’ reputation as a premier destination for water sports and snorkeling. The safety standards took effect last Thursday, marking a proactive step toward reducing preventable tragedies and fostering a safer experience for visitors.
