The Maldives Ministry of Environment has launched the “Magey Solar” initiative, a program aimed at promoting renewable energy by installing solar photovoltaic (PV) systems on household rooftops. In collaboration with FENAKA Corporation, the program is designed to help citizens reduce their electricity costs and transition to greener energy sources, making it a significant step toward the Maldives’ sustainability goals.
Through this initiative, households have the option to install either a 3-kilowatt (kW) or 5-kilowatt system, depending on their specific energy needs, which will be determined through an on-site assessment conducted by FENAKA Corporation. The 3 kW system is priced at MVR 45,000, while the 5 kW system is set at MVR 75,000. These costs reflect the installation of efficient solar systems that can significantly offset traditional electricity consumption, potentially saving households substantial amounts on their monthly utility bills.
To make the transition to solar more financially accessible, the “Magey Solar” program offers flexible payment plans. Households can choose to pay in a single lump sum or through installment plans spanning one, three, or five years. This flexibility enables more residents to participate in the program, as they can manage payments according to their financial circumstances. Households interested in taking part can submit applications through a dedicated online portal, which opened yesterday. By providing financing options and a streamlined application process, the program aims to reach as many households as possible.
