Maldives’ Foreign Minister, Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, has emphasized that while the nation values friendly relations with all countries, it places its relationship with India at the forefront.
In an interview during his official visit to India last weekend, Khaleel addressed concerns regarding the Maldives’ increasing engagement with China. He noted that in a polarized global landscape, it is in the Maldives’ best interest to foster close and amicable ties with multiple nations.
Khaleel highlighted the deep-rooted connection between the Maldives and India, particularly in areas such as trade, development, and social progress. “In its foreign policy, the Maldives will always prioritize its relations with India,” he stated.
The Minister further assured that strengthening ties with other nations would not come at the expense of the Maldives’ bond with India. “India is our neighbor and the first to respond in times of need. We will not let relations with any other country weaken this vital partnership,” Khaleel added.
This visit marked Khaleel’s first official trip to India since assuming office on September 30 of the previous year. He reiterated the Maldives’ commitment to Indian Ocean stability, stating, “We view India’s security as our security.”
Khaleel also addressed the controversial ‘India Out’ campaign spearheaded by former President Abdulla Yameen. He affirmed the current government’s firm opposition to the movement. While acknowledging that some individuals within the government had, in moments of high emotion, made statements contrary to this stance, Khaleel stressed that such remarks did not reflect official policy. He noted that the President’s actions against these individuals underscored the government’s dedication to maintaining strong relations with India.
