In a significant step toward improving national health, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has approved the establishment of Tobacco Cessation Clinics across all islands and cities in the Maldives. This initiative, endorsed during a Cabinet meeting, aligns with recommendations from the Ministry of Health to curb tobacco use and enhance the well-being of Maldivians.
Support for a Healthier Lifestyle
The new clinics will provide comprehensive support for individuals aiming to quit tobacco, offering access to necessary medications through the State Trading Organisation (STO) at hospitals nationwide. Classified as preventative healthcare services, these clinics will be integrated into the national health system, ensuring accessibility for all.
A Broader Health Initiative
This initiative forms a part of the government’s larger strategy to promote healthier lifestyles and reduce the prevalence of tobacco use. Key measures include:
- Recent amendments to the Tobacco Control Act and Export-Import Act.
- Increased levies on cigarettes and e-cigarettes, aimed at discouraging use.
The goal is to achieve a significant reduction in tobacco consumption within the next four years, fostering a healthier future for communities across the Maldives.
By prioritizing preventative healthcare and making cessation resources widely available, the government reaffirms its commitment to creating a smoke-free environment and empowering citizens to lead healthier lives.
