Maldives Weather Expected to Improve by Monday: Met Office

The Maldives Meteorological Office predicts a gradual improvement in weather conditions over the next 48 hours. However, light to moderate rain and thundershowers are expected to persist in parts of the northern and central regions of the country.

While southern islands may experience occasional light rain, the overall weather outlook is positive. Despite this, wave heights are anticipated to reach 4-6 feet on January 4, with rough seas likely, particularly under cloudy skies. Thunderstorms, accompanied by gusty winds of up to 40 mph, are expected to impact areas such as Lhaviyani Atoll, which remains under a white alert.

The Male’ region experienced record rainfall over the past 24 hours, with Hulhumale’ recording 144 mm, Male’ at 142.6 mm, and Hulhumale’ again at 122 mm, marking some of the heaviest downpours in recent years.

The Met Office has extended its warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall until January 6. Although earlier forecasts suggested an improvement by January 5, updated predictions indicate light to moderate rain will continue until January 6.

In response to the adverse weather, the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) has been actively addressing the flooding in Male’ City, pumping out a record 30,569 tonnes of water from the streets. The unprecedented rainfall has prompted government-led relief efforts to support those affected.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has reported that 226 people have been provided with temporary shelter and food assistance due to the ongoing flooding and disruption.
