Nilandhoo and Himmafushi Hit Hardest by Heavy Rainfall

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has identified Faafu Atoll Nilandhoo and Kaafu Atoll Himmafushi as the islands most severely impacted by the ongoing heavy rains.

As of 8:30 p.m. last night, reports indicated that Nilandhoo was 80% flooded, while Himmafushi experienced 60% flooding.

Nilandhoo Council reported that uninterrupted rainfall over eight hours caused widespread flooding across the island. However, dewatering efforts were successful, and the situation had been brought under control by 8 p.m. Council President Ali Ahmed stated that rainfall from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. resulted in significant damage, with floodwaters rising as high as two feet in some areas. Trenches were dug to drain the water, but the full extent of the damage remains unclear.

Meanwhile, Himmafushi continues to struggle with flooding, sewage leaks, and power outages. As of midnight, dewatering efforts had not been completed. A council official noted that trenches were dug on one side of the island to aid water drainage, but the situation remains challenging.

In addition to Nilandhoo and Himmafushi, other islands reporting flooding include Magoodhoo, Feeali, Guraidhoo, Maamigili, Kudahuvadhoo, and Meedhoo. Swell waves were also reported on Shaviyani Atoll Narudhoo and Raa Atoll Inguraidhoo.
