President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu participated in the opening of the World Leaders Climate Action Summit at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, which began on Monday and will run until November 22. This year’s summit theme, “In Solidarity for a Green World,” underscores the importance of unified global climate action.
The President’s Office highlighted that COP29 presents a vital platform for the Maldives to showcase its climate resilience initiatives and sustainability goals. President Muizzu, a strong advocate for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), will continue to bring attention to the unique climate challenges facing the Maldives.
Since assuming office in November 2023, this marks President Muizzu’s second COP participation. At COP28, he announced ambitious initiatives for a more climate-resilient Maldives, including a goal to plant five million trees and achieve 33% renewable energy reliance within five years.
Key COP29 priorities include establishing a new financial framework, enhancing international cooperation, and facilitating the development of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Before the opening session, President Muizzu joined other global leaders for a group photo, symbolizing a unified commitment to climate action. He is expected to deliver his national address later today, outlining the Maldives’ climate goals and strategies.
