Strong Winds and Rough Seas Expected in Maldives This Week

The Maldives is set to face strong winds and rough sea conditions starting Wednesday, December 18, according to the Maldives Meteorological Service (MET).

MET has cautioned that two low-pressure systems are likely to form in the Bay of Bengal today, with an additional system developing in the far south of the Maldives later this week. These systems are expected to move westward, bringing adverse weather conditions across the country.

  • Wind Speeds:
    • Southern and central atolls: 17 to 27 miles per hour
    • Northern atolls: 13 to 23 miles per hour
  • Sea Conditions:
    • Central and southern atolls: Rough to very rough seas expected
    • Squally thundershowers with gusts of 40 to 55 miles per hour are likely
    • Swell waves may affect southern and central atolls

The unfavorable weather is predicted to persist for five days. MET has advised residents and especially seafarers to stay updated on weather developments and take all necessary safety precautions during this period.
