The Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has officially launched its waste collection services in Kaafu Atoll Himmafushi. The service was inaugurated on Monday by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu during his official visit to islands in the atoll.
A senior WAMCO official stated that recruitment is currently underway, and practical waste collection operations are expected to commence within 10 days.
Expanding beyond Malé City, WAMCO has been gradually extending its services to atolls. This year, waste management services were also introduced in Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhuffushi and Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo.
The expansion is part of the national waste management initiative, Magey Saafu Raajjee (My Clean Maldives), outlined in the Week-14 roadmap. The program emphasizes implementing structured and environmentally friendly waste management systems across the islands.
Key objectives include establishing eco-friendly waste disposal centers, streamlining waste transportation between regional hubs and islands, and promoting sustainable practices. The initiative also aims to provide training and awareness programs on safe waste management at both island and regional levels.
This effort underscores the government’s commitment to fostering a cleaner and more sustainable Maldives through innovative and inclusive waste management solutions.
