Applications are now being accepted for two soon-to-be-vacant positions on the Maldives Broadcasting Commission. According to an announcement from the President’s Office, the terms of two out of the commission’s seven members are nearing completion. The application deadline is set for next Tuesday.
Unlike previous instances where calls for applications were issued weeks in advance, this announcement comes close to the end of the current members’ terms.
The opening coincides with ongoing debates over a proposed Media and Broadcasting Bill, introduced by an independent MP, which seeks to merge the Maldives Media Council and the Broadcasting Commission. Critics, including media outlets and NGOs, argue the bill threatens press freedom.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu recently assured that the ruling People’s National Congress, which holds a parliamentary supermajority, will reject the bill.
Separately, the terms of several Media Council members are set to expire on December 14. While the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Information, and Arts had initiated elections for these posts, the process has been paused.
