Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Mohamed Ameen, has reported significant progress in the construction of the new international terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA). Speaking on International Air Transport Day, the Minister highlighted that the project is advancing ahead of schedule, signaling a promising milestone for the Maldives’ aviation sector.
The expedited completion of the terminal is expected to enhance passenger services, facilitate increased operations by domestic and international airlines, and bolster the Maldives’ connectivity to global markets. The new terminal is seen as a critical upgrade to support the country’s growing tourism industry and improve overall airport efficiency.
Minister Ameen also announced ongoing preparations for a mid-2025 audit by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). This evaluation will measure the Maldives’ compliance with international aviation standards, with the Minister expressing confidence in the Civil Aviation Authority’s readiness to achieve favorable results.
Additional advancements in the Maldives’ aviation industry were also highlighted, including the reintroduction of helicopter services and the deployment of wide-body aircraft for the national airline. These developments represent significant strides in diversifying aviation services and expanding operational capacity, further positioning the Maldives as a key player in regional and international air transport.
