Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim has announced that several organizations have shown interest in supporting the Five Million Trees Planting Programme, increasing the target number of trees to be planted under the initiative to 3.1 million.
In a post on social media, Minister Thoriq highlighted that various parties are keen to contribute to the programme, stating that 400,000 trees have already been planted as part of this initiative. He expressed optimism about surpassing the goal of five million trees within the next four years, fulfilling the main objective of the programme.
The Five Million Trees Planting Programme was launched by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on June 5, coinciding with World Environment Day 2024. This pledge represents a significant commitment to planting five million trees throughout the Maldives. The ministry noted that 398,000 trees were planted on the very first day of the programme. A major focus of the initiative is the restoration of endangered species, with 90 species classified as endangered in the Maldives.
