The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has alerted the public about dangerously high air pollution levels in the Greater Malé area, urging precautions to protect public health.
Data from the air quality monitoring system at the Maldives National University’s Centre for Maritime Studies in Villimalé indicates an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 156, which falls under the hazardous category. This poses health risks to the general population, particularly vulnerable groups such as individuals with respiratory or heart conditions, pregnant women, children, and the elderly.
HPA has advised residents to limit outdoor activities, wear masks when outside, and keep doors and windows closed to reduce exposure to polluted air. They also recommended avoiding strenuous activities outdoors and ensuring infants remain indoors to minimize health risks.
The agency is closely monitoring the situation and has urged the public to remain alert, follow health guidelines, and stay updated as conditions develop.
