The Maldives Education Ministry has announced the 2024-2025 academic calendar, aligning with a campaign commitment from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to restore the main school holiday to December. This move reflects public feedback advocating for a return to the year-end break, as it better suits travel conditions and seasonal patterns in the Maldives. Previously, the school holiday shifted to June-July, a period marked by heavy monsoon rains, which posed challenges for family travel and limited outdoor activities for students during their vacation.
The updated calendar will see the current academic year conclude on April 30, 2024, with the new school term beginning on May 26. To ease the transition back to a January start by 2026, a mid-year break of four weeks in June-July has also been incorporated, providing students with a much-needed pause in the academic schedule. The goal is to ensure that the academic schedule supports student well-being while being adaptable to both the educational needs of students and the logistical needs of families.
Educational experts have been involved in structuring this calendar shift, focusing on how it can benefit students academically and socially. Feedback from educators and parents has been largely positive, with many expressing relief at the return to December holidays, which offer families better weather and more enjoyable travel opportunities during the break.
While the change has been well-received by many, there are some who remain concerned about the mid-year break’s impact on learning continuity. However, the Ministry has stated that careful planning and support will ensure the adjustments benefit students and align with broader national objectives for educational stability.
