The Maldives has partnered with Sinohydro Corporation, a leading Chinese state-owned engineering and construction firm, to develop 1,000 social housing units on B. Eydhafushi. The agreement was formalized during a ceremony at the President’s Office, attended by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and signed by Infrastructure Minister Dr. Abdulla Muthalib.
Key Project Features
- Design: The project will consist of three 15-story towers.
- Housing Units: 336 three-bedroom apartments and 772 two-bedroom apartments.
- Developmental Vision: Minister Muthalib highlighted that Eydhafushi has been designated as a future urban hub. With limited space for horizontal expansion, vertical development was deemed essential to maximize land use.
Economic and Social Impact
- Strategic Location: Surrounded by several resorts, the housing units will cater to individuals working in Eydhafushi and nearby resorts.
- Community Growth: The project aims to boost the island’s population, create employment opportunities, and encourage more locals to work in neighboring tourism establishments.
- Regional Significance: Eydhafushi is poised to become a key hub among the Maldives’ emerging urban centers, further driving regional development.
This initiative aligns with the government’s broader goal of addressing housing shortages and promoting equitable development across the archipelago.
